When day contracts
Night expands
Breaking the shackles
On the world of dreams
The capacious quiet
Allows for nocturnal journey
To the recesses of inner space
Mountains and dark tunnels
Sinister arcades of foreign cities
Or the secret place where tears
Or desire emerge
A release of seminal energy
Prodding investigations at 3 a.m.
Of women you do not yet know
Time loosens and that childhood
Incident comes back for another immersion--
Night is its own dimension

Night, a place of the mind,
The soul,
A place of nothingness
And begetting,
The seed transmitted
Under cover of darkness

If you knew at the beginning
If you knew what was the beginning
So to know the end
If you knew that was the ending
Then would that have changed
The beginning?
Or was the beginning set by the end
And only known by the ending
As a chair is only known after it is made

All potentiality is merely possible
The end shows only one necessity
Here, rumination in a cheap hotel
Where there is no one to text
And the dripping water in the bathroom
Says you are alone

Winter storm
The indignity of the cold
Racking the body
Shivering, shaking, falling
On wet patches of ice
You go numb in the heartless
Freezing wind and snow
And blocked by the curtain
Of white you feel you know
You are completely on your own

Silence not as reticence
Or a jealous guarding of truth,
A hedge around hermetic wisdom,
Silence as numbness
All through the long night

Sunday, February 15, 2015

Turn your head to the wall
And close your eyes
The short winter days
Hold nothing but snow
And when night comes
You will already be asleep

In the time of the balaclava
You see the gunfire across the street
Where a window
In the flare of light
Forms a face
Of sorrow and bewilderment
Unmasked
In the dark city
