Love Poem

Through blood moons
And comets that disquiet
Meteors that threaten
To rend the planet
With their heavy showers

Through acid fields
And wrenching violence
Enough to make the earth embarrassed
At giving birth

Through baseless hatred
That inflames without healing
I come to you and look in your eyes
Rejecting the meaningless scorn
That surrounds us like poison

I see your weary smile
And hold your face in my hands

Who is it that is so close
Hovering by your ear
Whispering words that
Startle you with truth?
The unimaginable is
But a breath away

During the busy day
You look out the window
Of your office
And absently gaze at other offices
In the building across the street
You see people at work
Sitting at their tasks
When sunlight illumines the glass
Of their windows
And you suddenly realize the message

Each age, each day
The need to recreate
Though we never brought ourselves in
But were created
For what purpose many answers
Yet created
The tree, the rock
Shaped and formed by wind and rain
Still a tree and rock created
Humility is the beginning

AR-15

Open spaces where the
Enemy hides
Jet fighters overhead
Leading into a mall
Where the enemy moves into
The produce section of a supermarket
Or the racks of appliances at a hardware store
The enemy hides in the sound of children
Studying and playing
Your weapon is just an object
Inert when left alone
But trusty when you sense an enemy
That your mind can find anywhere

Why on the day of calm
When the trees are still
And there is a green world of birds
Is there a tension in your chest
When thoughts are not real?

Fingers of light stream
While you sit in the shade
Thinking of the future
And what it portends
Temporarily distracted
By a yellow butterfly
Doing its work
In the present moment

Seemingly calm the graves
As attendants mow the grass
Under a cloudless sky
Does the new tenant feel
Shame, pain, and disgrace at
His dissolution
Clinging still to the sensory
Pleasures of earth
A lost ghost
Waiting for the light?

A devil cloud
Spiraling in dust
On the flat plain
Thoughts of suicide intrude
While spirit voices seek help
How much pain and evil must there be
Until suffering is gone
And the weeds of darkness

Are burned to oblivion

High, very high
The birds gathered in unison
On the tree tops
Singing in chorus
A conference of the birds
Knowing their solidarity
They hold their position
Until a signal prompts them
To fly all at once
To a place you do not know

When you were in despair
Driving distractedly and
Waiting for an exit sign
Two deers leapt from the roadside forest
And sprang with abandon across the highway
Dodging the oncoming cars
With balletic grace
You smiled for a moment

Thoughts like a hook
Piercing the tranquil mind
Fears like a baby crying
Looking for a parent’s kiss—
To everything detach
Even to what you call yourself

In your hands an ancient letter
Dead because never sent
To a love that never was
Reading the lines memory stirs
Before you rip it into pieces
And toss it away

In the silent hours
When you are alone with sleep
And dreams
You hear shouting in the darkened street
And see the car lights crossing
Your ceiling
You pray and fall back to sleep
Hoping for peaceful dreams

You distrust the day
It is dull and empty
Filled with purposeless challenges
And chance humiliations
The blandishments of whores
And the solace of paid friends
